April 2012

Dear Class of 2015,

It is almost time to register for the Fall of 2012. As you consider which classes to take, stop to ask yourself a few questions: Which classes in your first year have changed the way you think? What are you most curious to learn more about? What "how" and "why" questions do you find yourself gravitating toward? Which understandings in the Common Curriculum did you have less contact with than others?   more>>

Sincerely,

Kyle Gillette
Class Marshal

It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like……Fiesta????

Yes, that’s right.  It’s Fiesta Time in San Antonio.  Fiesta celebrations first started in 1891 when the citizens of San Antonio decided to honor the heroes of the Alamo and Battle of San Jacinto through a Battle of Flowers.  Today the Battle of Flowers parade is the second largest parade in the United States.  However, over time, Fiesta has become a city-wide celebration spanning over the course of  11 days (with over 100 events).  Here are some great ones to check out during this year’s Fiesta celebration with runs April 19-29.  However, you can also check out the Fiesta Web site at www.fiesta-sa.org for more details.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
It’s often hard to know how to respond to a sexual assault survivor, but two things are of critical importance.  First, an empathic response that communicates your concern will show the survivor that you are willing to listen nonjudgmentally and offer support throughout the healing process.  You will want to communicate that the assault is not the survivor’s fault and that you are available to talk at any time.  Second, it is essential for a sexual assault survivor to have as much control as possible in handling the events following the assault.  This pertains to everything from how much information s/he chooses to share with you to decisions about whether to take any disciplinary or judicial action about the assault.  For more information about helping a survivor, click here, and visit Trinity’s Sexual Assault Web site. Survivors of sexual assault may wish to make an appointment with a counselor at Counseling Services.

The University Standards Committee meets annually to review, revise, and update
Trinity University policies. Student representatives to the committee are Logan Walsh, Joseph Moore, and Kelly Wilson. Major revisions of policy often take a lot of time and require involvement of many. If you have such ideas to propose, please start now by contacting these students or Dean of Students, David Tuttle at dtuttle@trinity.edu. Any ideas are welcome from the community.

It’s hard to believe that we are approaching the home stretch of your first year of college. It seems like only yesterday that it was a bazillion degrees outside, and you were constantly forced to listen to this super-energetic guy (me) who was way too excited about orientation. But I told you’d we’d have fun over our first six days together, and we did so I think I’ve earned a bit of credibility with you.  more>>

Hello Class of 2015!

I hope you all have enjoyed the school year and are continuing to claim your education.  While some of you may be off to see friends and family this Spring Break, those of you who are around campus that week have several different things you could take advantage of in San Antonio.  Here are just a few:

Events
San Antonio Spurs Homes Games (evenings of 3/12 and 3/14 at the AT&T Center).
San Antonio Rampage Hockey Games (evenings of 3/16 and 3/17 at the AT&T Center).
Sinbad’s Comedy Tour (evening of 3/16 at the Majestic Theater Downtown). This show has a 5 star rating on Ticketmaster.

Popular Hot Spots That Are Open
Six Flags Fiesta Texas
Sea World (Has extended hours the week of Spring Break).
San Antonio Zoo (We have a great zoo and it is very close to the campus).        Japanese Tea Gardens (No admission required.  This is just a great spot to go and enjoy).
Witte Museum (Currently showing Darwin: How One Man’s Theory Turned the World on its Head.  Also very close to campus on Broadway.)
Enchanted Rock National Park in Fredericksburg TX

Outside the City
Gruene  (Home of Gruene Hall, one of the oldest dance halls in Texas.  They have live music every day of the week.)
New Braunfels (Great town.  Landa Park is also a wonderful park located in the city by the river).
Austin (Austin can be a great day trip with a lot of local wonderful hotspots).

There are just a few suggestions.  However, I encourage you to go out and explore with the free time you have.  Go volunteer (there are several organizations that would enjoy your time and talent.  You can find them with a quick Google search).  Go try something new.  Go learn about something completely outside your classes.  Use this time to continue the path of claiming your education.  You’ll be glad you did.

Kyle Gillette, Class Marshal

Dear Class of 2015,

As you approach Spring Break, you have an opportunity to take a much-needed (and well-deserved) rest. Whether you plan to visit friends or family, participate in an alternative Spring Break experience, travel, or just catch up on sleep, this week gives you a crucial chance to take a breath and relax.

Spring Break also allows you to reflect on your year so far. What have you learned? How do you see the world -- and your place in it -- differently than you did before? Which classes and co-curricular activities have pushed you beyond what you thought you could do? What do you want to explore further next year?

By taking a step back and seeing your education from a broader perspective, you can start to appreciate the role Trinity plays in your development as a whole person. You can clear your head, recognize your passions and interests, and take the next step: finish out the year with focus and clarity while picking classes for next year that will help you develop further.

Take a deep breath, take stock, and have a great Spring Break!

Over the semester break, the campus was eerily quiet without your collective supply of energy. I even started standing by the upper campus construction zone in the afternoons because the silence became unbearable. Eventually, the crew put me to work…so if you’ve noticed a classroom in the Center for Science & Innovation that leans slightly to the left, that’s my handiwork. You’re welcome.  more>>
