March 2014

Dear Class of 2015,

A few days ago, I threw my back out. At first it was uncomfortable, then moderately painful, then, this morning, acute. My mind and body disagreed about how best to proceed. There are too many things to do to be laid up, I thought, too many projects to complete; there are rehearsals and classes and conferences and meetings and plays to attend, a new puppy to pick up after, chores and groceries and cleaning to be done. Yet, alas, the body has its limits. I muscled through the first few days, but that only made it worse and worse. Finally every step was excruciating and even sitting or standing up made everything so much harder. It wasn’t ultimately my choice whether or not to keep going. I finally went to the doctor. more>>

Class of 2015,

I know by now you are looking forward to Spring Break and having a hiatus from coursework and other commitments.  However, I really felt it was important this month to focus on the importance of summer internships.

An internship is a great experience for a number of reasons.  Here are just a few:

1.  For those that might be on the fence about their committed major, it is a way to "test drive" a career which is supported by your chosen academic discipline.
2. This type of experience may be the deciding factor between you and another applicant (whether it be a graduate school or a potential employer).
3.  In some cases internships lead to full time job offers upon graduation.
4.  You build your list of professional references and contacts for the future.  more>>

Feeling Sleepy?
If you’re yawning today, or have been other days this week, it’s time for a sleep check-up.  Sleep deprivation is a common experience among college students, and the consequences are numerous, including impaired concentration, impaired mood, and suppression of the immune system.  In fact, getting adequate sleep is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health!  Check out the Harvard University medical school’s 12 tips for improving sleep here
