May 2015

Dear Class of 2015,

On March 4, just outside the Ruth Taylor Theatre building, Trinity Professor and prominent sociologist Dr. Michael Kearl collapsed from a heart attack. He later died in the hospital. A thoughtful, bold, expansive thinker, Dr. Kearl was also a warm, generous person with a rare capacity for mirth. For the students who took classes from him, he was powerful and erudite, thought-provoking about ideas and attentive to theirs. For the faculty who had the honor of calling him a colleague, he was a firebrand, a fierce advocate of the liberal arts, yet also a gentle mentor and, for many, a genuine friend.

Dr. Kearl — Mike to his friends and colleagues — would have been the best person on campus to make sense of our collective experience of his singular loss. Besides his caring mentorship and teaching, he was a leading thinker about the sociology of death. It may seem to us that his devastating loss was merely unspeakably senseless, a deep wound in the Trinity community. But Mike Kearl’s monograph Endings: A Sociology of Death and Dying (Oxford University Press: 1989) argues that “death is the central force shaping our social life and order.” In this characteristically interdisciplinary book MORE >>

April 2015

Hello Class of 2015!

The finish line is quickly approaching and therefore you probably have a good idea on what life is going to look like after graduation. I remember having solidified life after college by this time and honestly I was starting to lose focus and patience with my academics. I was mentally done with my current routine and was anxious to move to a new one. While this might seem negative, it isn’t. Trinity prepared me to be an independent, contributing adult in society and I was ready for the challenge.

The thing that drove me crazy at this juncture? Group projects. My assigned Business Policy group was an utter disaster. I am sure you’ve had similar experiences- one person is a slacker and skips meetings, another is mentally on a different page from the rest of the group, and someone is MORE>>

Get What You Pay For: The Education and the Network

I’m sure you’ve heard at one time or another that it’s not what you know, it’s who you know that really matters. Actually, both understanding concepts and knowing people are necessary in order to succeed. While you may be busy with exams, sporting events, or just hanging out at this point in the semester, I strongly encourage you to make time to get advice from Trinity alumni who are already employed in areas in which you are interested.

You can do this through TRINITYCONNECT – an online resource brought to you by Career Services and Alumni Relations. Use your T-mail address to access the system and to schedule a conversation today. Take advantage of a professional network that has volunteered to share insight and experience with you. Let me know if you need assistance or have any questions.

Trinity wants to improve your experience and the experience of future Tigers, and you can help by completing the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).  NSSE helps us understand how students are spending time in and out of the classroom, which guides decisions that will benefit Trinity students for generations.
Please check your e-mail for a link to the survey.  You should have received a survey invitation by e-mail earlier this month.  If you can’t find the link—no worries!  An additional e-mail reminder will be sent out in the next week.
In appreciation for participating, we will enter all students who complete the survey into a drawing for 1 of 2 Google Nexus Tablets (worth $175).  One senior and one first-year student will be selected to win.

February 2015

Dear Class of 2015,

This is really it: your last semester at Trinity. Ever.

 Is it sinking in?
You probably don’t need a lot of extra pressure to get a job or worry about the future. That doesn’t help. But you may help yourself (and each other) by recognizing how special it is to be in your last semester: each class, each rehearsal, each encounter or difficulty can take on a special kind of sheen. Part of what makes college special is the fact that it ends. In a way, you — insofar as you identify as a “college student” — end.

It must feel rather More >>

Class of 2015,

“Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.” -  Dalai Lama

I remember at this point in my Senior year I was focused on what life after Trinity looked like.  I was very fortunate that my parents covered the cost of my education and I didn’t want to burden them with additional expense after my graduation.  They say that looking for a job can be a full time job and I committed to the search with that passion.  I was excited to start building my life after college.

I would spend hours looking for open positions at companies I had interest in and met several times with Career Services.  I researched interview questions and discovered the “dos and don’ts” in formal interviews.  My friends and I would talk about where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do.  While I enjoyed my last semester I had realized the journey was ending soon and I needed to plan the next one.  As stressed as I was I reflected back to an internship opportunity I once pursued…..

In 2001 one of the biggest employers of recent Trinity graduates announced More >>
